We have been ticking away at this build.
We had a few large roadblocks that took a lot of finesse to make work correctly. We were most worried about the downpipe, wastegate, and cross-over pipe fitment. These are each a make or break on the whole build and each one effects the other. All of these revolve around the manifold and as we got further along we had to go back and modify the turbo manifold to make each fit.
The first big thing was obviously turbo fitment. Once we received the turbo we worked to complete the front side of the manifold. We had to keep in mind the fitment with the hood. This is a very large turbo.
Lost coloring when I compressed these images.
Once the turbo placement was finalized, we had to work in a wastegate placement. We need to be able to control boost very well as this is going to be on pump gas normally. With such a big turbo and wastegate, the wastegate placement is very limited. We are using a turbosmart comp 45. Some basic math proves this is large enough for us to run down to gate pressure of 7 psi.
With this completed we then focused on the downpipe. With a turbo build like this one we really wanted to run a 3.5" downpipe. The factory wiring harness and the factory air-conditioning were both limiting us on placement of the downpipe. We decided to extend the wiring harness and move the routing of the chassis power wires to allow a 3.5" downpipe along with a 2" crossover pipe. This was extremely time consuming but we wanted to do this properly and leave the car with zero fire concerns. This is an area with minimal airflow so we will add a heat shield as well just to be safe.
We are planning on making the downpipe 3 pieces. One segment that ties in with the Eisenmann exhaust and is mounted to the motor coming up just behind the valve cover and another smaller segment going from there to the turbo. These will both be vband connections that will allow easy servicing of the coil packs and spark plugs. We are planning a little custom vanity cover to dress up the build further.
We took some time to jig up the manifold so we'll be able to offer this to anyone who wishes to turbo their m6x. The inner fender was originally modified on this car during the supercharger build so anyone running this large of a turbo may have to follow suit.
The progress this week may seem small, but these sort of fine details are what make or break the overall build, they are the building blocks. Our goal here is to really make a finished build.

Just wondering if anyone here on BFC has used this or simular turbo before? I understand there are not too many turbo BMW 8s here (or anywhere).

BorgWarner makes very nice turbos. Its going to be nearly impossible to beat the quality for the price! The S300 series is a good fit for the I6s on a street setup. The S400 turbine and the 72mm compressor should provide a lot of airflow and good spool with your motors displacement.
The turbos are physically large, but the aero is quite good on the turbines and they perform well for the size if you are worried about it being too big.

This looks great so far!
I will be featured in Matt Farah's "Smoking Tire" on You Tube, but I apologize I don't know the date yet. I had some magazines interested when I had the s/c system, and now with the turbo hopefully it will still stand. Also looking for some sponsors to advertise with to help us both out. And I cannot say enough about Zack and 22RPD Tuning. Have to love engineers!

Long delay on the posts here, apologize for that, We have been super busy. We were planning on getting this car in-and-out because we had so much lined up for the end of the year. Having the turbo back us into this window really is unfortunate. A little light on pictures this time but I hope you enjoy nonetheless.
We really appreciate Jim's patience in all of this, hope this helps your week man.
As of earlier this week we finished up most of the fabrication, we took all the parts out for ceramic and powder. The exhaust is going to be ceramic coated inside and out to help with engine bay temperatures, the turbine housing to match.
We modified the A/W Intercooler to run A/N lines, and welded bungs on to match. This was originally heater hose and we thought a build like this really deserved proper lines.
We have matching oil feed and drain lines, all AN.
We did the fuel system out of the same AN lines, this is running 3/4" diameter rails (you saw before) paired with a AN feed to each rail with an aeromotive regulator. We are running fuel pressure sensors off the back of the rails for the standalone. We knocked out the 2-1 collector for bank 2 and the cross over pipe out of 2" stainless, back purged, mandrel bent. The crossover pipe is a bit too big to picture reasonably.
The downpipe is a 4" stainless, backpurged, 2mm wall thickness, mandrel bent. We use a little bit heavier stainless here to help keep the heat in. Pairing this with ceramic should result in good engine bay temperatures.
While we are waiting on the paint we moved, extended, and mounted all the engine harness and its extremities out of the way to accommodate the large exhaust.
Additionally, we welded on the Vibrant Clam-shell clamps and removed the ASC throttle.
As soon as the parts back we are onto assembly and tuning.

Make sure you put some 1/8" spacers in the middle of all the clamps during fab to put them in the neutral position of their travel.
Wow, I haven't been active on the 7 forums much since I've moved three times and my car sat without a trans for almost 7yrs until recently. I'd forgotten all about that mess you've had to deal with on that car! RK hasn't gotten any better...they asked for multiple pics, measurements, etc of the custom intake I had made for my X5M, we'd talked about making copies in CF vs mine originally beimg made of SS, then LONG story short they'd borrowed a friends X5M, made sure it all fit and then left him high and dry. Good to see you're still around after all those headaches! I damn near wanted to switch platforms (sell all 5 of our BMW's and goto Lexus or something) after the first engine swap in the GF's 535xiT (which is gonna need another due to a spun bearing) so seeing you sticking around still makes me see that it could be worse! I hope things work out better this time around and you can start enjoying all that work and money you've put into it!

Who's sleeving the S62? I had to have my M62 in my 98 740iL rebuilt after the PO botched a head gasket job, fortunately at the time I had a warranty on the car and a shop called www.bavengine.com (almost 10yrs ago and they're under new ownership now so I've heard they outsource vs in-house) did the entire rebuild which they claim to have sleeved the block, ported the heads, reground cams, etc. LONG story short I bought an all but useless Jaguar XJR supercharger kit that was supposed to be modified to work on an M62, which it doesn't, so this thread is interesting in that I've always wanted to turbo this car anyways.
