Hello all. Hello all. I have a fully custom 840ci. I've had it for for 13 years and am thinking its time to upgrade the engine. Is there one in particular that you guys would reccomend
The E38 boys love sticking the S62 in their 740's!

I fantasize about a BMW straight-six turbodiesel (say N57, for example) in an E31, preferably with a manual transmission. I doubt there's a single "830d" anywhere in the States. I've given enough thought to this idea to research stand-alone engine controllers capable of running that engine, but of course you've got a million other things to look at -- instrumentation for one. It would be a tall order but an awesome build. Same or better performance, probably close to double the fuel economy, and just the "oddity appeal."
Cheers, John
I've done a fair amount of research on this. There are two economically reasonable options: forced induction or if you have a pre-1996 car, drop in a M62 and manage it with M60 electronics. The resulting hybrid is called an M60B44. Both options have been built many times and are easy to learn about and replicate. I'm going down the latter route. Changing to a 3.64 diff will also perk things up, although it makes absolutely no difference in 0-60.

If you are in Cali, I suggest you relocate to a different state. It would be a Pita and $$$ to get a Bar'd e31 w/s62. Sure, some may say I've got a friend who works at a Star station, but he'd better be open for business for as long as you own the car.
