Hey Everyone,
Over the years, I have used this forum a lot in my various troubles with the M3. Now we would like to contribute.
It's common knowledge to this community that the E46 M3's VANOS system was less than optimal. Various parts within the system were prone to failure. As much information that is out there on repairing the VANOS, a lot of it is inconsistent at best. When doing our first one, It was challenging finding all of the quality information that is out there, a lot of which was on this forum.
Because of this, we wanted to do a thread on Bulletproofing the VANOS. We are posting videos for anyone who was like us that finds themselves screwed over by the VANOS system but doesn't want to give a shop their left arm to repair it properly. We are utilizing Dr VANOS components for this job as we have found them to be the highest quality, and even improved upon from stock! A huge plus if you are going to track your M3. Installed properly, you will most likely never have to worry about it again if you use all the upgrades from DR VANOS.
For this build we are removing and installing:
- Upgraded VANOS w/ new solenoids
- S54 Cryo treated Exhaust hub (30% stronger) these often break
- S54 Intake hub
- S54 REM coated Cam Gears
- Cam gear bolt set
- S54 modified intake gear
- S54 modified Exhaust gear
- S54 Timing Chain guide-(ours was broken)
- S54 VANOS Oil line
Yes it costs some money, but its worth it for the reliability! Hope you enjoy and please comment and lets enjoy this build!
Looking forward to your updates!

Were just starting to get into the meat and potatoes such as retaining engine timing and superior setup. After our install, we noticed major improvements by optimally timing the VANOS with synchro gears, so were pretty excited to share.
