Red face Swirl flaps on M57 Engine

    Hi eveybody,

    I'm new at this forum,
    I own 2004 model e60 530d car,
I've heard many many scary stories about swirl flap failure on M57 engine
I have a nice idea to prevent tiny screws' loosing on swirl flaps
remove these tiny screws , after this apply loctite 270 on these and finally install it to intake manifold again
I don't know what size is these tiny screws on swirl flap ?

thanks for your answers in advance

Not 100% sure but I think the swirl flaps are secured by a rivot and not a screw, as you usually have to break them off.

If your going through the trouble of removing the manifold either remove them and seal off the vac pipe to the actuator, or replace with new ones, they revised the design on them for later generation which are "suppose" to be stronger.

Only down side is lower end torque can be reduced slightly without them.

if it was a rivot, it wouldn't fall into engine

It's not just the rivets/screws that were failing, whole flaps were disintegrating. Just buy blanking plates on ebay for $30 and put those in.

    I've removed intake manifold today
I've tried to remove one of tiny screws on swirl flap, too but couldn't have done
    I leaved as it was,
I decided to check intake manifold every six months
I think I would sell my car to buy e92 335i two years later.
