picked up new X3 today, but found this - poor workmanship or else?

guys, I picked up my X3 20i today in Melbourne Australia, good car. but later tonight I found a yellow hole on the corner of the door, looks bad. and I found same thing on each of the 4 doors, so is this by factory?

That's rust. And really bad if it's a new car. Was this a new delivery?

It’s not rust. It’s excess rust prevention coating.

Correct. That is not rust. That hole is supposed to be there (it's a drain hole). The inside of the door is coated to prevent rust. What do they call that stuff, cosmolene?

Whoops. Sorry. I was looking quickly on the phone... But did earlier Gen x3s have such large drains?

Again... My apologies for the snap (and mis) diagnisisq

Zbart anti rust coating and salt corrosion. But why in Australia? It is normally dealer done by third party. If it is Zbart it really works. It’s normally squirted in the rocker panels and a few other places and then they have to plug the holes where they insert the application wand. It is/ was big the the USA in snow country.

That’s a factory applied rust prevention coating.

AFAIK, every BMW has cosmoline applied at the factory

It's what gives a lot of old BMW engine bays that weird gold luster. The cosmoline dries up and bakes on after years of driving when not properly removed at the port of entry when the vehicle was delivered.
