Up for sale is my 1998 BMW M3 Sedan in Dakar Yellow II. This is the last year they made the E36 M3 in a sedan. It is equipped with an automatic transmission and currently has 176K miles on the car. Despite the mileage, this car has been nothing but reliable: it drives smooth, shifts smooth, and contains zero modifications whatsoever outside of an aluminum radiator (more on the cooling system later). It has been kept every winter in a climate-controlled garage and has not seen a single snowflake since I have owned it.
The backstory: I bought it from a so-called mechanic in Arlington Heights who, like a lot of people who sell BMWs, claims to have been a BMW mechanic. That seemed doubtful. However, since purchasing the car in 2015, I have been slowly restoring it to its former glory. Due to having recently purchased an E46 M3, I can't justify the space in the garage that this one is currently occupying. If not for that I would keep it forever.
The good bullet points:
-Great brakes with plenty of life
-Great matching tires with plenty of life (Ventus)
-New ignition lock cylinder (no more spinning key problems) with new key
-New intake boot.
-New ICV hose
-Entirely refreshed cooling system including new upper and lower hoses, new thermostat and gasket, new water pump and gasket, brand new belts, and an aluminum radiator. I purchased the aluminum version since they do not crack like the OEM plastic ones do.
-No LEAKS whatsoever.
-No RUST whatsoever. Literally none. Good luck finding an E36 M3 in the Midwest without rust!
-All power electronics work flawlessly, including the sunroof, windows, and door locks.
-Manual, heated seats.
-No tears in the leather seats.
-Brand new M3 floormats.
-Heat works, AC works.
-Two sets of keys
-Paperwork and documentation since my ownership
The "bad" bullet points:
-The car appears to have been repainted in multiple areas including both front and rear bumpers, and seemingly the entire driver's side of the car. Despite all of this, every panel retains its proper vin tag and the CarFax shows no accident history. In my opinion, the paint discrepancies are hardly noticeable -so unnoticeable that it took me a year to realize it had seen some paint work.
-The car likely needs wheel bearings. I am still unsure if it needs fronts or rears. I only hear a noise when I make slow turns out of my subdivision. Maybe it's my street? Again, unsure. Do them anyway.
-The rims have been curb-rashed by the PO(s). Get them refinished.
-The headliner is sagging...typical E36.
-Will need door handle gaskets. They are cheap and easy to install, but I never got around to doing them.
-There are tiny dents on the driver's passenger door. Please check the photos closely.
-There is another slight dent on the hood that is hard to see. Again, please check the photos closely.
-The paint on the rear bumper is flaking away. Evidence of a poor body shop.
If you're looking for a garage queen, go ahead and pass on this. If you're looking for that "Ultimate Driving Machine" spirit, then please inquire. This car will not let you down and is the perfect candidate for a 5 or 6 speed manual swap.
Clean title in hand. $7500 OBO. Low ball offers will be politely ignored. Please DM me for questions. Thank you for looking and please check the Craigslist ad below for more pictures.
