Bmw e46 320d - lack of power and black smoke

I have a bmw e46 320d on 170,000 miles. the car started to smoke a while back and the day i noticed it i turned the car off and left it and the eml light came on. car continued to smoke but the light went off, the light then only came on if i booted it onto a motorway or something. Eventually i noticed a big power loss and alot of black smoke. if i drive the car say in 3rd doing 30mph below 2000rpm the rpms jerk or hesitates if i hold my foot there. I have replaced the turbo, done the swirl flaps, replaced crankcase oil filter breather,new egr and no change. please ask me some questions ill try answer them as I dont want to have to take it to a garage for a bill i cant afford. many thanks

The first step in diagnosing a problem is to scan the engine computer (DDM) for codes. As there is no ignition in a diesel I suspect there’s a problem in the fuel management system.
