We have a 2002 e46 325i. Husband was just filling up with petrol. After he'd finished.cashier noticed loads of petrol had come out . We lost about £20 of the £30 petrol we put in. What could this be

You have to put some back in to identify the origin of the leak and ideally take a picture of it, so we will be more able to help you.

isn't there are cross over, or transfer tube, between the two tank halves? If so, I would start there

Two fuel tanks..E46.....a pony pump..drivers side....pumping fuel to the other tank..passengers side.....the main tank...here is where the main fuel pump is located...then pumped into a 'fuel regulator/ filter' before engine injection system..also with possible failure points....NOTE The reason for two fuel tanks...BMW could not offer 15+ gallons of fuel without an additional tank....located the otherside of the 'drive shaft' hense two tanks...one tank delivers to the other....get it?

Which side of the car is the leak? It sounds as if the fill pipe is partially disconnected. Did the leak start when the refueling started?

Stop driving the car immediately and get it to a shop. You obviously have a pretty significant leak in the fuel system.

which side is the primary tank and pump, just for me to know. two people answered up above here and the answer is confusing, to me
