    E36 M52B20 ECU Tuning

Is it possible to alter/tune anything with the stock ecu, or would I have to get a chip?

The very early MS41 ecus had non flashable memory.
Anything after 1996 was easy to flash.

It may be flashable, i am not sure of cutoff month in 1995.

Get the part numbers (hardware, etc) of the ecu.

I went out and looked at the ECU

    5WK9 018
    DME MS41.0

Also looked at my cars documents and it states that the date of first registration was 1995/06/01 (year/month/day)

I did some research and i think that the cutoff month was 1995/09 so my ECU isn't flashable, now my question is, is it possible to swap out that ecu for a slightly newer one which can be flashed? Or is there any way I can go about this because I would like to get into engine tuning.

Yes, you can buy the newer flashable ecu, sync EWS (very easy), and tune that. It plugs right in.

I just don't know what kind of power you can make from just tuning that small engine. It's almost not worth it, unless you're aiming for forced induction.

If you have M52, normally you should have MS41, it's easy to tune with partial .bin (with INPA compatible usb/OBD cable you can Flash / write in lot of easy way). I have somes files & software definition to share if you need, just message me.
