Im about to change the air filter and noticed a white pre filter area on the back of the OEM filter. What is that? Is it necessary? None of the air filters I found in the surrounding auto parts stores have it. Do I need to transfer it over to the new one? I looked at the more expensive ones such as K&N and it doesn't have it either. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks.
I remember there was a carbon filter and an air filter in the air intake of my E60. Not sure both is really needed. I recall removing mine. . Haven't checked in my F10 yet.
Is that what you are referring to?

The correct part# for your car is Mann #C281251
The white mesh provides a tighter seal over the round sensor(?) in the bottom of the housing.

No, its a white piece of rough white "brillo" type of material.

Yeah I noticed some sort of round apparatus that the white material covered. Whats the purpose of this round sensor?
