Hi all,
My 2003 318 has suddenly (began when I left work the other day and got worse as I drove home) started stuttering as if the engine is not getting enough fuel. It is struggling to accelerate, whereas cruising at high RPM and constant speed is ok (ie when you don't hit the gas)
The engine starts just fine, maybe with a bit of a delay compared to before.
Idling in neutral the revs don't drop but the engine is making a kind of rhythmic stutter... like a chugachugachugachuga sound (think like a steam train I guess).
Oh, and the EML light is permanently on now, though sometimes starts flashing if I drive it a bit.
I can still drive around, but it takes a ton more gas to move anywhere and is uncomfortable... and really slow to accelerate.
Does anyone have any pointers? I plan on getting it looked at soon but would like to know if it's likely to be an easy DIY job (would be my first) or if it's likely to be a very expensive fix...
Thank you!
Edit: I should add the strangely enough, that same day I refuelled in the morning and topped up the engine oil (I did spill a bit of oil too..?)

Scan for error codes..
Test for fuel pressure at fuel rail, at various speeds/rpm's.
Do not rule out transmission.
