I'm finalizing the details for dropping an M62 into my 1995 840 and I'm trying to ferret out all the possible problems. The last one I know about is that the M62 uses a toothed flywheel while the M60 does not. Will the toothed flywheel clear? Are there any cars running the M62-5hp30 combo? I'm pretty sure the bolt patterns are the same, but clearance may be an issue.
Thanks.
Brett
The swap has been done a couple of times AFAIR. The usual plan is to use the M60 DME, and that means swapping out the camshaft plate on the M62 for the M60 version and using the original inductive camshaft sensor - and also using the M60 CRANKshaft sensor along with the vibration damper meaning that the flywheel encoder is superfluous. I don't remember any problems with the use of the 5HP30 in this configuration.
As I am sure you have worked out, using the M62 DME is not possible.

Thanks, Tim. Can I just use the M60 flywheel (which I read is lighter) or will I run into balance issues? I've found a bunch of poorly documented builds, so I'm adding some guesswork of my own. With luck, I'll be able to post some definitive answers for any 840 owners that want to try this.
I certainly don't remember anyone swapping the flywheel - I would hazard a guess that there isn't any clearance issues with the M62 version....

By coincidence, I came across a post on the E38 Forum where it is discussed that the 5HP30 was mated with the M62 from the factory - the 5HP30 was used on the following models (copied from a post by Jamos):
- 1994–1995 BMW E38 — 740i M60/B40
- 1996–1997 BMW E38 — 740i M62/B44
- 1992–1994 BMW E32 — 740iL M60/B40
- 1994–1995 BMW E38 — 740iL M60/B40
- 1996–1997 BMW E38 — 740iL M62/B44
- 1998-2001 BMW E38 — 740d M67/D40
- 1994–2001 BMW E38 — 750iL M73/B54
....should have looked on my own website really - as it is there in black and white:

From the documents I have the late model E31, with 5-speed, only used the 5hp30 transmission regardless of engine type, V12-M73B54, V8-M60B40 & M62B44
Here is some ZF info:
The ZF App Chart is apparently not that accurate for engine type and e31 years.
The BMW ST057 training manual page 47 is more enlightening and accurate with respect to engine trans combinations.

I would have loved a 5HP30 in my 840ci - but it is fitted with a 5HP24, The change-over was late 1996, so there won't be many in the US, but in the UK they are predominant as we carried on into 1999:
