The Quick Time bell housing was modified to fit BMW starters. (It now fits M50-M54 starter depths of up to 57mm)
Then I mounted up everything to start the mock-up in the chassis:
And found that I need to modify the dust shield for the dry sump oil pan:

Obviously, the side mounted shifter was going to need some clearancing to happen:
So I did.....but then found that the bell housing hit the trans tunnel:
I ended up cutting out part of that area of the tunnel, and then using the BFH to get the remaining clearance needed:
Adding a few items to the interior to check the layout:
The shift mechanism sits 7" left of centre, and would hit the seat if I had it mounted where I wanted it:
With the transmission in 2nd gear, the shift lever nearly hits the steering wheel in the position that I want it in:
It really doesn't matter though.
Today I'm looking at moving the engine back through the firewall a significant amount to give more space in the engine compartment for "things".
Regardless of where the engine is going to sit, I'm going to make new engine mounts out of steel. With the kind of torque I will be making, with a dog box transmission, and slicks, the engine mounts are going to take a beating...

The bell housing is equally large on both sides.....and if it was shifted all to the passenger side, I've have an exhaust routing issue. In fact....I already have one. The 4" flange on the turbo sits right next to the bell housing....I'm going to have to do some more "clearancing" to make things fit.
New engine mounts are done....part of the valve cover officially resides under the front window now.
Getting serious about cutting:
25 pack of wheels, and a new grinder. (I have 2 grinders, but I'm always having to switch the wheels out, so I figured it was time....)

Speaking of yokes, consider getting a quick release. I don't know how deep the diff sits in the E46 carrier frame but in the E30 it's too deep to be able to collapse the slip joint enough to get the DS out of the diff. I have a very cool Mark Williams piece, makes DS removal one of the easiest jobs on the car as opposed to the pain in the ass it usually is on BMWs.
I used to run a bottom mount setup from Cartech and it was crazy. Almost immediate reaction from a turbo. I kinda wish I would have stayed with that setup at times. Have fun with your project!

Get a quick release front yoke anyway because your going to have to have a driveshaft loop in the tunnel too and it’s a million times easier to just take off the front and leave the shaft in the car vs taking off the rear and fishing it though the loop and onto the output spline. Been there done that. Mark Williams are the best. I have a Inland Empire one in there now, they said it was rated for 2000 hp.

Weeks ago, I contacted Quick Time directly through their website, and received an automated confirmation that they received my message. To date, I have heard nothing back from anyone at Quick Time. (Or Holley)
If they have indeed received my feedback, I hope that others don't have to go through what I have with their product. I got billed $250 for a professional (accredited) welder to fix it, so it will be considered properly welded by the NHRA inspector.
To move the engine, I needed to fabricate new engine mount arms. I had 1/4" thick plates cut for me, then drilled them out to be mounted to the side of the block. Then I tried to position the engine and transmission into the car to built the mounts:
That failed.
I had a very hard time getting the engine rotated to be on a 30 degree angle, while using the engine lift and conventional pickup points. The windshield was in the way, and the COG of the engine was just off.
The Juggernaut (Dmitry) suggested I do it out of the car with the engine on a stand, and use the front crossmember to do the mock up. This worked out really well.
Setting the angle:
I made a platform/jig to hold the front cross-member with the OEM engine mounts in place:
I then marked the bottom of the oil pan to see how far back I was able to move the engine:
With the subframe locked in place, I then started tacking together the new engine mount arms:

Doing compound cuts on pipe bends for the new WG mounting:
And...thanks to all the EGT bungs on the bottom of the SS manifold, I can't run the 2.5" charge pipe where I was looking at before. (Just under the manifold) So I mocked up the 4" turbo inlet pipe, and started looking at running the charge pipe over the cross member, but starting with the compressor outlet pointed down:

You lost a bit of your car...
I saw a cool S14 240SX that had the engine moved back really far to where the end of the windshield was sitting over roughly cylinder 2 or so. To work on the engine they had the windshield flip up and a dzus'd cover over the engine and one for the trans that was quick and easy to remove. It actually seemed super easy to work on the engine just sitting inside the car with the covers removed.
Thought about pushing things back EVEN MORE?
