As it starts getting cooler here in Germany I discovered my heated seats are not working. The lights do not go on at all. I inspected the #12 and 16 fuses and both are ok. What do I check next?

Wiring under the seat and the connector
pull and reseat the plugs? Is it just one or both seats?
Before pulling any connectors you need to disconnect battery.... Failing to do so will cause a fault code/light.
Each seat has a connector/connection under the seat.

Sorry for coming back late, I was working in Garmisch-Partenkirchen the past week. On the way down I went through Kempten and then by Neuschwanstein Castle and through Oberammergau. Had a really scenic drive back going through Austria to get back to Autobahn A7. The traffic on 99 around Munich is just too much...
Both sides. I'll try making sure the plugs are tight before I go to the point of disconnecting the battery and then pulling them apart.

I went out to the parking lot with a flashlight, could not see anything loose but not sure I knew what I was looking for. Where are the connectors under the seats?
Neither button lights and the DSC button is not functioning... Thinking that might be a part of the problem I checked the fuses 7, 24, 42, and 43. All are in order.

You might want to use INPA and see if there are any faults thrown or maybe see if you can test the heaters from the computer. It may be you have a bad switch block or a bad connection / broken wire to it.

Test from the car's computer?
No, INPA is software you can run on a laptop to let you read fault codes, clear fault codes, and do some test procedures. I know the E46 forums (M3Forum & E46fanatics) some some good threads showing how to install it and use it. You need a windows computer (or VM) and a cheap OBD2-USB cable.

Yes, I agree that the Foxwell units are easier but certainly more expensive. If you want to play with configuring settings in your car or if your budget is tight, using a computer with an OBD2 cable is the way to go. If you don't mind spending the extra money or don't want to mess with installing software, etc, the Foxwell units can't be beat - that is unless you want to spend crazy money on pro gear.

Since Bosch makes a lot of electronics fro BMW, MB, etc. and I live close to one I took the car in for diagnosis there for both the seats and the illuminated globe light on the dash. Amazingly they could not read the codes and could not find the wiring diagrams for the American Z4M... I have an appointment with BMW next week. Hopefully that will go better.
In the meantime, I still have a burned out globe light on the dash, How do I access that indicator and pull the bulb?

The car was at BMW in Mainz today. The heated seat issue was a controller that cost a little more than 300 Euro.
They are unable to identify the light issue. They are telling me there are several controllers that might be the cause of the illuminated warning light on the dash but they cannot pin it down. They also said it could be a problem in the wiring harness....
Amazing the BMW mechanics can't sort this out!
