Hello,
Especially in the winter time I observed that my oil gauge of my E30 (320i) just went a little bit above the minimum temperature position. In the summer time I used the car more times (it is a convertible) and the oil gauge went maximum to 25% of the maximum temperature position (about half way between the minimum and the middle position). I measured then the temperature of the oil tubes with a infrared temperature tool and it was about 84 °C.
I already measured the electrical resistance of the two temperature sensors which showed "normal" results. I think the sensors are ok (but not 100% sure). Perhaps there is a problem with the oil thermostat as even when driving just 15min. also the coolant tube of the larger circuit is hot (which could mean that the thermostat is always open).
Do anybody knows the oil temperatures when the oil gauge goes to the Minimum, middle and maximum position ?
Any advices ?
Best regards
Wolfgang
Sorry it is the collant temperature and Not the oil temperature

Coolant temperature
The gauges are not very accurate but are more to monitor changes. 80c is the recommended tstat and if you are running close to that and have no obvious problems, you should be fine. Use your infrared gun on different parts of the radiator to see if parts of it are not circulating as well as other parts (a very common problem)

Not sure about numbers, but the middle of the temp gauge (first to third mark) covers just a few degrees. Anything between there won't kill your engine.
Typical E30 position of the needle is somewhat left of the middle mark, and usually won't pass it.
This gauge is not buffered as opposed to newer cars, so it will travel a bit.
