I have a 2002 BMW X5 4.4 L that needs a new/ used ECU. I was told if I purchase one from eBay and it does not match my Vin then it will not work. Can anybody give me some help with this on what I should do. I don’t have $1000 to pay BMW for a new one. As a single mom this is just kicking my ass today

What's wrong with your ECU/DME (they are different names for the same component) that you are being told you need a new one?
The reason you can't just pop any ECU/DME into your vehicle is due to EWS. The EWS system has a specific/unique ISN (individual serial number) burned into it that matches the same ISN burned into the EWS control module and all of your keys. If this ISN doesn't match, then the vehicle will not start.
