E21 320/6 found in junkyard in New York

Hey guys, I found a euro E21 at Matt's Auto Parts. it has an m20 in it with original carb. I was quoted $250 for the motor and $400 for the transmission. I wanted to make you all aware of this as 6 cylinder e21 swaps are getting more expensive all the time. Will post pics shortly.

Wouldn't the transmission be either a 4 speed or 5 speed depending on the year? big difference in value i would think.

It was an 80 and IIRC all 6 cyl E21s are 5 speeds

    yes an '80 would be a 5 speed. but no I think pre-1980 323 e21's had 4 speeds. so I don't think all 6 cyl e21's were 5 speed.

Upon research i concede you are in fact correct. Perhaps I should not trust my memory so much. :P

I hope someone saves the whole drivetrain. You could swap it to a US e21 if your state does not require smog tests. Not California. Save the cross member too, as well as the motor mounts (arms).

Also don't these have rear disk brakes or was that just the 323i?

Only the 323i had the rear disc brakes. The 320/6 came with drums.

You may want to check the diff as well to see if it is a LSD.

It's totally rusted out, the body is probably unusable.

max, you should reconsider grabbing that transmission because it's valuable.

M20's and G260 transmissions from E30's are cheap, have a better fuel injection and are fairly common making them a good choice for swapping into an E21. the problem with the E30's transmission is it's lack of mechanical speedometer drive, also there is no other transmissions from the E21 family that will bolt to the M20.

therefore this transmission not only has a speedo output, but it also bolts to all M20's, M42/44's and m5X's..... and that is why you can not afford not to buy that trans, you could probably double your money or more.

the engine mounts also have some value being that they are no longer available and people want them for E21/M20 swaps. the subframes can be had for 150 bucks new, but without the mounting arms the new subframes serve little purpose.

i would also grab the driveshaft with that transmission and from what i'm seeing lately on the market you could probably sell the both trans with the shaft for $1000.00

Tom, I believe the subframe is NLA...
Unless its rusted out it is valuable as well.

Just a thanks to Max for posting this car here! I finally made it over to Matt's yesterday and picked up the e21 m20 swap goodies from the 320/6 for my 83 320iS. The engine is still there, I did not look at the diff, but got the trans/shifter, x member + engine cradle/arms/mounts, radiator, coolant recover tank. I was hoping to get the instrument cluster for the 6 cyl tach but it was gone. if anyone out there has a tach they can part with, please let me know, thanks.
