Wow, what an anti-climactic end. Reserve not met at $115k.
I think that result actually has the potential to hurt interest in the model short-term. Lots of folks who might otherwise bid on other CSi examples may move on, saying, "well, if they don't sell at $115,000, then I can't afford one" or "for that kind of money, Ill take a 550 Maranello." (I'll be the first to admit -- that second one is my own no-brainer reaction. On the other hand, maybe it benefits those of us with 850/6MT examples...a fair bit of the CSi experience for a good bit less money.)
Alec, I hope this doesn't hurt your efforts to bring additional E31 cars to market, but I can almost guarantee the question will be asked on the next one up: "Is it really for sale?"
Cheers, John
Thanks.
I’m not discouraged at all. In fact, the opposite. Even more motivated. This is a special car with special buyer’s taste because of its color combo. Also, Monterey car week worked against us.
I have lots more coming. The market has not softened up.
Like everything, the market for these cars will find its own level, and we can't really control or manipulate that to any significant extent.
As Alec has said of the subject car, timing could have been the issue here rather than a softening market.
For the record, I would gladly accept $USD115k right now for my pristine 20k-mile (ECE-spec) 850CSi - but only because I know that the RHD CSi market is a completely different playing field, with fewer interested buyers and typically lower sale prices as a result.
For the subject car, I would let the dust settle for a bit, then in a couple of months time relaunch it to the marketplace.
Current:
1994 E31 850CSi Sterlingsilber/Anthracite Buffalo
Previous:
1987 E28 M5 Delphin
1986 E23 M745iA Arctic Blue
1986 E24 635CSi Polaris
1976 E3 3.0 Si Arctic Blue
I checked today and saw that 21 of 33 cars that same day did not meet reserve. Mostly classics. Usually 90% of the cars on BaT sell. It tells me it was no coincidense. Monterey car week is the largest car gathering in the world and affects everything in the classic car business. My mistake. Lesson learned. However, in the aftermath, I’m happy it didn’t sell. I have much bigger plans for the car now...
