I know the e30 vs e46 thing has been done many times, but I'm wondering specifically about reliability / maintenance costs, and the actual value of the trade (I know the e30 is appreciating).
A friend of mine owns a 2002 325i with 240k miles, but a rebuilt engine. He has money and has kept it running very well. He's willing to trade for my '91 318is convertible with only 140k miles on it. I absolutely love the e30, but I'm in school so I don't have much time or money to keep her running and can only have one car. Would the e46 make a better / cheaper / more reliable daily?
Thanks,
Alec
(Not sure if this is the right subform; mods feel free to move it)
If you don't have much money to keep the 27 year old 318 running, how do you figure you'll keep a newer more expensive car running?
And yes I would trade a convertible e30 for an e46 as long as the e46 is in as good of shape as your friend claims. Definitely get it inspected. If everything checks out and he has proof of the rebuilt motor. Go for it.
Sorry I didn't reply—I didn't get a notification for some reason. I can afford to keep it going; the question is just if the newer one would be cheaper than the older to keep running. I've been hearing that's not the case, though, since they're so much more complex.
Keep the 318
