    Ceramic exhaust manifolds

Has anyone looked into or had their OEM cast iron exhaust manifolds ceramic coated?
Street car. M54 530i. Looking to reduce under bonnet temperatures as well as any power gains.
    Worthwhile?
    Waste of time and effort?
Not enough return for the dollars spent?

What problem are you trying solve? Temps hot under hood? No Kidding. Engines after 1990 are designed to run hot due to emissions. Engineering discovered/confirmed that high temps in a VERY controlled temp range allows NOX to be controlled and allows manufactures to meet Federal emissions standards on exhaust. End results: The thermostats are 195 degree, temps under hoods are hot hot hot, plastics and rubber parts deteriorate due to heat cycles, all of which lead to parts failures way down the road after warranty expires. Gee what insight! See DIY articles for lots of examples.

As a DIY/Harry Home Owner you can approach this issue with one of two thoughts. 1. Reduce temps and impact engine designs/Emissions/Engine management designs. 2. Expel more heat faster - Open up the hood with vents as found on Carbon Fiber aftermarket hoods. At 15 years +++ why would you bother? Replace the impacted parts (once in the life of the average E39) and drive it.

Oh, I would recommend replacing the hood pad/silencer as by now it is is full of dirt, dust, pollen and is more than likely ripped. $100 and it makes the under hood nice once again.

Bottom Line: I agree with GG, WASTE OF TIME & $$

Wait a minute you are located down under. Its WINTER down there. You want heat!! Up here we are cooking our toes alive just walking crossing the street!

I had my long tube headers ceramic coated inside and out. This keeps the exhaust heat inside the headers and is suppose to help speed up the flow and give a small increase in HP. I do notice the under hood temps are lower.
You may just want to try wrapping them to reduce the heat emitted into the engine bay.

There is a process called extrusion that I have done on on Chrysler big blocks to make the OE cast Iron manifolds look OE but flow more. Coating/wrapping will reduce the heat temps radiating from the parts but the value from doing it on a OE part vs a aftermarket header on a non race car are a looks cool and labor trade off.

if you have a blast cabinet and air compressor, this might be a (fairly) low buck alternative. I haven't used this product but I have coated a LOT of stuff myself. It's like most things involving a paint gun, prep is key. Techline also has some DIY coatings. If the manifolds are cast iron I wouldn't be afraid to wrap them. DEI has some wraparound shields that might work and the won't trap moisture as bad as the ~2" wide wrap.

Have you considered having the inside of your muffler polished for additional flow?

Great LOLs in this thread. To be fair, if you had a disassembled motor or heads or WTF ever, and wanted to coat or wrap or whatever, sure... fine, might bring temps down a micro wiener amount and make your engine look kewlerz when you show it off at the local stroke and poke... but...

Street car ass M54 and stone cold no other reason that the car is apart? Waste of time. (I wouldn’t ever think about extrude honing either.... just get some godammn headers for the thing!!! And THEN get em coated... that’s a well thought out not retarded plan...)
