    Machine shop in SE Michigan?

I'm refreshing my S52 and am trying to find a reputable machine shop in the Detroit area who is able to do the work. Sadly since this is "Motor City," every place i've called so far has said they don't touch foreign.... Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

Hello, are you looking for a BMW shop that has a machine shop in-house? Or for someone to build your head?

I know Nicholas Motorsports has an inhouse machine shop but you'll probably be charged on the higher end for basic job. I'll ask some local guys where they get their work done.

That’s interesting about nicholas.. I didn’t know they did machine work too. I don’t doubt they would be top dollar though as I’ve had them do work on previous cars. I appreciate you asking around for me!

Ya they did some head work on the s52 in my compact. Turn around was less than a week. I assume you want to go direct to the source/machinist for this stuff. I like Jeremy over at F1 Motorsports in Livonia area. He doesn't do machine work inhouse but went through an M10 head for me. Nice guy to chat with as well. I'll follow up tomorrow with some shops.

Dropped the head off at Nikolas Motorsport today. Waiting to hear on a price. David (owner) said he’d done hundreds of these heads and it wouldn’t be a problem. Fingers crossed for not costing an arm and a leg....

I think my decking was $200 with another 2 for some cleaning. They should have given you a quote seeing how many they have done. Least it should be done soon.

yeh so they wanted to charge me $1400 to skim it, clean it and do a valve job... what a fucking joke. I had them skim it only for $200 and they didn't even have the decency to wash it. Have to say thats the second time i've given them a chance and the last.

    Machine shop in SE Michigan?

Wow that’s insane. I’ll be talking to y friends to see who they use. I think Nicholas is more of a shop where people don’t exactly know what is all happening, and they just drop it off and write a check. Not that there is anything wrong with people for paying things to be built for them, hell I wish I could do that on somem things. But it’s somewhat insulting as my automotive knowledge grows and what things cost vs what people are charged.

I’ve had work done there and it’s been satisfactory nothing amazing, and slightly overpriced but sometimes I don’t have the time or tools. That said I’ve had 2 errors come from there and haven’t gone back since.
