    Rear Wheel Bearings Replacement

    I've been getting this very loud and annoying rear bearing noise when at speeds of 70mph+. I've been contemplating about taking on the project of replacing the wheel bearing on both sides in the rear.
    I don't think it will be an easy job and I've recently bought a 20 ton press from Harbor Freight to do this type of jobs. Has anyone recently done theirs or is there a right up somewhere I could use to reference, especially if there are things to avoid or pay attention to when doing this job?

    These are the parts I'm thinking I will need to get unless but if I'm missing something, please advice.
    Parts needed are: #3, #2, #4. I don't know what #5 is as there is no listed part number for it.

    Had a 1991 BMW 850
    Just did my fronts. In the rear You have to take the bracket off the brakes not the usual caliper off because of clearance issues. Hammer out the stake, Use an Impact if you have one to take off the large nut. If not breaker bar. Tap the hub off with a hammer. Hopefullly you don't leave a race on the axle. Some people heat the hub up to 200 degrees in the oven for 20 minutes. I just lubed it up and used a socket that matched the races and tapped it on. Torque to appropriate and check bearing there should be some slight resistance.

    Thanks for sharing your documented maintenance journal on your 8. I found your section on the rear wheel bearing replacement very helpful. I have also scoured the internet and viewed other write-ups but your's is most specific to the 8. I have purchased some tools in preparation for this job and I hope I don't have to take the entire carrier out. I'm leaning more towards disconnecting the wheel axle in order to give me room behind the carrier to push the wheel bearing out. Will probably have to resort to cutting the bearing inner race like how you had to do that on your job as well.

    Thanks for the documentation on bearing and bushing replacement! I am planning to rebuild the rear suspension this winter, install a LSD, and larger bar. I also had a split seat rail gear but I got with a friend of mine who made a rubber mold and cast a few replacements in brass. I did use a machinist to true up the gears and he also pressed one onto spline shaft.

    JDP530, in terms of the seat rail gear, you got a nice resource from a friend there. Lot's of talks about make casts for the gear in the past but the option is scarce. Can't view your attachment by the way.

    I will reload the photo. I could sell the gears for about $50 but they do require a press to fit them and they aren't perfect. The machinist I used determined the clearance he needed to press it onto spline so it would not crack and come loose. So far so good.
