I wonder what where the behind the door reasons for this? He probably wanted the same pay but McLaren said we can't afford to pay you that much any longer, so only thing Alonso can do is announce his retirement and hope some other F1 would want to pay that much to him. That is how its done.
Ferrari did the same think to Kimi, so he accepted less pay to stay.
Looks like Carlos Sianz will take Alonso's seat at Mcl.
