Check engine light came on, so bought a SeekOne SK860 OBD scanner to check the codes on my 2008 750Li.
Plugged it into the car's OBD port and the scanner came alive. Started the engine. Chose the menu option to check the codes. Scan performed, returned 3 codes. Chose the menu option to read the first one and then the unit went black, as if it were no longer receiving power.
Shut off the engine off and unplugged the unit. Tried various combinations of turning the ignition back on, starting the engine, reseating the plugs both in the OBD port and on the unit itself and could never get it to come back on.
Figured the unit just died and took it inside to ship it back to Amazon. On a whim, I connected it to my laptop to see if the thing would work and it did!
So I know the scanner itself works. The scanner's USB port used to plug into a laptop is different from the port used to plug into the OBD so I'm deducing that something could be wrong with that port or maybe the scanner blew the fuse on whatever circuit it's on.
Just on a hunch, I tried all my cigarette lighters and they still work. Does anyone know what fuse controls the OBD?

Found it myself. Glove compartment fuse box. Fuse 29.
By the way, the fuse was good. The scanner's serial port must have blown. Back it goes.

Scanner serial port?? I had same thing on my Foxwell 510. Blew the fuse every time. I would go to a BMW shop near my house and they would plug in with no problem, I pulled mine out, plugged it in... everything is hunky dory. I get home thought what the heck let me try it... POP. Go Figure!!! Went up to Advance Auto Parts. They hooked in.... no problem.
