I am the 3rd owner of this vehicle, it was purchased from a good friend/coworker who bought the car CPO from BMW in 2003 (lease trade-in). This vehicle has been meticulously cared for throughout its life, as the folder of complete receipts/records back to 2003 show. It is a 0 accident vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in 2016 with 130k miles on the odometer (now 156k). The documents show that I have personally put more than $9000 in new parts and maintenance items into this vehicle - bringing it up to what I would consider to be tip-top mechanical condition for an e38.
Items replaced include: Replacement of all 4 Catalytic Converters, radiator expansion tank, B&G coilover suspension at all 4 corners, 750il brake upgrade at all 4 corners using new / remanufactured parts, rust removal and repaint of 2 rear doors and inner fenders, exhaust brackets, secondary air pump system, all 4 control arms replaced (front and rear), all 4 m-parallel wheels professionally refinished, transmission flushed and OEM filter installed, rear engine coolant hoses replaced, entire PVC system re-gasketed, timing chain tensioner, engine mounts, 8 Bosch ignition coils, spark plugs, valve cover and timing chain cover gaskets, alternator, valley pan and associated gaskets, complete Bavsound speaker upgrade, VW Monsoon rear speaker deck upgrade, shadowline trim installed, cabin and under hood charcoal filters, polish and paint correction, mkiv nav upgrade, brand new battery, new aux fan, NJ inspected through 2019. There is even more I am likely leaving out, but you get the gist.
I would rate the mechanical condition of this vehicle as excellent. The new owner should enjoy MANY miles of maintenance-free motoring. However, no 17-year-old car is flawless. The paint looks great but does have small pockmarks from many highway miles, the rear window regulators could use replacement, AC could use a recharge (currently works fine, but starts to wane when temps are over 90), and the exhaust has developed a small thud while going over bumps (suspect the mounts are worn from recent work).
Compression was recently run, and it came back with a strong 170-180psi across all 8 cylinders. There is no timing chain slap or VANOS noise, likely due to the quality of oil / frequent oil changes and maintenance of the timing chain tensioner throughout the vehicles life. The timing chain covers were recently removed and there was no sign of guide wear, and the oil pan was recently dropped and there was no debris present (illustrated in photos in above link)
If I had the room I would be keeping this car, but I recently purchased a BRZ as a dedicated track vehicle, so this one must go. Happy to show in the Northern NJ area.
