    Diagnostic convert problem?

    Hi there!

    I've a little problem with my ADS interface. It's an serial cable as you know, but I don't have an serial adapter on my laptop only on my PC. So... I would like to convert the cable to usb. How can I fix this? Anyone has a diagram to build some circuit for it? Or any ideas how can I convert this ADS interface to usb port?

    Thanks a lot!

    Read the "Almost free ADS" thread on here.
    Consensus is you can 't.

    In fact you asked the same on your other thread, where I said...……...

    Normally no, ADS does not work with USB. There were some posts on there about getting it to work with PCMCIA and funny drivers.

    ADS will not work without a true serial port.

    The second question is why do you need ADS? Most modules will work with a K+DCAN and 20-pin adapter. What won't work is KOMBI and ABS/ASC+T if equipped. If plain ABS without traction control, K+DCAN will work.

    Didn't you expience that plain ABS module was a but of a hit 'n miss whether or not you could read them with just K-line?

    ADS is needed for:

    Kombi (aka gauge cluster)
    ASC+T/ABS (and *some* ABS units)
    FFB (remote control module, not applicable to US)
    CVM (vert roof module)
    OBC
    URRS sensor (rollover bars on verts)

    Since I have every possible module on my car, except DDE/EGS, I can say that with just K-line on my 1998 M3 I can get into:

    DME
    GM (ZKE)
    SMG
    ABS
    PDC (parking sensors)
    GR2 (cruise control)
    IHKA
    SRS (airbag)
    EWS

    Never had any joy on the ABS with a KKL / Vagcom, and my KKL is serial too so no USB in the mix.

    Is your IHKA analogue or digital?

    IHKA = digital
    IHKR = analog

    And 1998 will always be digital btw

    Maybe it was another member who needed ADS for older ABS units.

    As people have said above ADS won't work over USB but you might not need ADS to get what you want.

    Having said this, since you have ADS working already it would pay to see if you can get a docking station from CL or eBay for you laptop - if the docking station (or port replicator/extender) has a real serial port then that'll work. I do this as my laptop also doesn't have a serial port but my docking station does. Slightly less portable but it works and I got my docking station for $10.

    So yet again this thread highlights the pointlessness of starting multiple threads on same thing and repeating answered questions.
