Hello I am a brand new member and just picked up a 2001 740il with 125k from a local auction. It does not crank or start. Please help me figure out whats wrong.
Here is what i've found so far.
No power to starter relay on pin 86 or 30
Car also has no P light on dash gear indicator, i purchased a used neutral safety switch from a 97 740il with no effect.
It seems that the ews is not working/ allowing power to be applied to starter relay, but would the NSS cause this? Basically which should i figure out first?
Welcome to the forum. If the DME doesn't see it's in P or N, it's not going to do anything. Have you checked the ebox to make sure the modules are there and plugged in? Everything look good under the plate at the gear shift?
Selector position lights don't care anything about the EWS. It should come on even without the key in the ignition.

i tested power and grounds to the DME and EGS, they are good. I scanned the car with a friends laptop using carsoft software i believe and most modules wouldn't respond. Heres a pic of what showed up.
well guess im not allowed to post pictures. Anyway i believe that the dme and egs are done for since they do not respond but have good power and ground supply. Does the egs require coding if replaced with used?
As long as you get an EGS from the same year and model no programming is needed
