How do I know if the oil level sensor is functioning as expected?

Oil changed a month ago. But I have an oil leak that is strong enough to smell and some burning is seen from dark smoke but yet my oil level still says its full (normal)

Am I not taking the reading correctly? (car should be started and in park, right?) or is it simply broken? Is there a self test?

Please any help is appreciated Im nervous I'll run low on oil and damage the motor...

    Ty

    That doesn't answer my question.
