the thermostat at the bottom of the expansion tank where it meets the bracket....can the car operate temporarily without it until the part is ordered? I have everything but this part and really need my car before locating this part.

Its the thermostat that controls the auto transmission cooling. If its summer time in your area, then you can get away without it for a few days. If its cold weather, then your transmission will be sluggish.
