    Scrapyard alert, '94 740iL near Pittsburgh

    Just passing along a tip if you're looking for parts, these cars are getting hard to find! I pulled the brakes, stereo and toolkit. Otherwise the car is nearly complete.

    Interior was pretty well wasted, not a lot of great options except an LSD, rear shade, side window shades, SLS. Complete set of 15" mesh alloys including all four caps and tool. Might have been an extended leather interior? Console and door cards are natur leather. Power/memory comfort seats with rear bolster. Some might be salvageable. I have no history on the car, VIN is WBAGD8321RDE91084. There was a yellow dot on the windshield, not sure if that's some kind of code for why the car was scrapped. Might have been a flood car but it's nearly complete. The motor even turned over with my booster pack.

    Go pull the rear door and quarter window sun shades - STAT. The LSD is also pretty valuable

    I think the LSD just sold. The rear quarter shades were missing but the rear door panels were still there. I might head back up this weekend to grab more stuff.

    Tell me about it! The ONLY thing missing from that entire car were both covers on the rear window uprights. I've never seen a set in the wild, so I'm guessing that the rear section of the window shades broke or were too precious to let go.

    The other shades are all still there. If I head back I'll grab the ski bag, rear deck shade and what's left of the the rear side shades.

    If you haven't already gone back could you check to see if the chrome trim + weatherstrip at the base of the window on the outside of the driver's door is there and in good condition?

    Haven't gone back yet, but I'll let you know when I do. IIRC those strips looked OK.

    This car didn’t come with an LSD from factory, so before spending the time removing it, I would confirm that someone swapped one in.

    We'er still going back and forth on the LSD. He pulled it, can't find a tag or marking, hasn't opened it up yet.

    Cool, thanks! Let me know if you go back to get parts for the car. I'll buy that chrome strip with weather seal if the weatherstrip isn't dried/worn out or cracked, and the chrome isn't scratched up. The chrome strip is removed by prying up from the back edge and working forward until it comes up. You have to remove the driver's side mirror to get it off, and be careful not to bend the chrome. The weatherstrip is inside the chrome piece and comes off with it. It's easiest to lift off the chrome with the window rolled down.

    Shouldn’t have to open it, if it’s a question of if it is LSD or not just turn the input flange, if the output flanges turn in the same direction it’s limited slip, if they turn in opposite directions it’s open diff. There should also be a large white stamped “S” on the top (or perhaps the bottom) of the diff case if it’s LSD. Like this:



    In addition, if you’re questioning the gear ratio, count how many turns the input flange rotates for one complete turn of the output flange = your ratio.

    If the diff is LSD check the break torque on the output flanges to confirm if the clutches are holding or not. Shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to figure out what the seller has in front of him.
