Hi all,
My car was a factory automatic, but sometime in the 80's it was converted to manual.
This gearbox has stripped the hardening on first gear, so i'm trying to source a replacement gear or even a whole gearbox, but it's proving hard. I've bought GM gearboxes, had leads on BMW gearboxes but with fins etc, none seem to match what I have.
I was hoping someone here with much, much knowledge than me may be able to identify it via photos...
It's a 5 speed with a normal 1st gear. Casting reads 262.0.510.00.
Thanks
Getrag 265/6

Who rebuilt it? Mine is at the transmission shop, but parts to fix it are scarce.
Mines not a dogleg box and 5th is an overdrive gear
Metric Mechanic offers rebuilds in the United States, but I'd figure there are other outfits down under that perform similar work. You can alternatively substitute the later Getrag 260/6 for the 265 but it's scarce in many markets. The 260/6 was offered in many early 90s BMWs. You'll also need other parts: driveshaft, support subframe, and shifter assembly at a minimum to make it work. Google is your friend, lots of pages devoted to all that.
If I recall correctly, 1st gear is machined into the idler shaft forging. That idler shaft has gotten to be very difficult to find. BMW has recently stopped manufacturing parts for many of their older cars. To make things worse, Getrag was recently purchased by Magna (Steyr), I'd presume like most corporate mergers it'll focus on profits instead of customer service.

I have been offered a 260/5, but speedo drives and things like that appear to be different - All solvable issues of course, but i'd like to stick with the 265 if possible as it's a beast of a transmission.
Worst case, due to the parts shortages, i'll look into having a batch of first gears custom made. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but i'm sure i'm not the only person requiring gears for one.
Alternatively, talk to a machine shop. They might be able to build up the forging with welded material, then machine them back into shape. I've seen that done with spur-cut motorcycle 'boxes. Given the hypoid gear it's unlikely, but in this age of CNC & 3-axis milling machines, perhaps it's doable.
Methinks the synchros are also a high-wear item, especially 2nd. Getrag builds a lot of other 'boxes, perhaps a cross-ref part from a larger 'box could work? MM has a lot of details on their site about upgraded synchos among the other stuff they rebuild. I'd definitely start with them.
