E39 fuel tank into a E38?

Hey guys,

Kind of an arbitrary idea. Posting this in the general area in hopes someone with experience sees it.

I'm thinking about tank options for my e38, the main goal is to gain ground clearance. I'm considering going all out with a tank relocation to a fuel cell in the trunk. But I want to look into other options first, which led me to thinking about a e39 tank retrofit.

I'm wondering if anyone has retrofit the plastic e39 fuel tank into an e38, or looked into the details of what that might involve? Mounting, line running, similarities/differences, etc. So far from initially looking under both my e38 and e39 I understand the mounting and dimensions are somewhat similar. The e39 tank is a lot tighter around the exhaust area. And the fuel lines in and out are in a different spots, amongst other things.

Any other related information would be useful. If anyone has done a tank relocation or a fuel cell for other reasons I'd love to get some insight from you

I don't know if it is possible but why exactly do you want more ground clearance? Aren't there a lot more things you would also have to remove/relocate to gain ground clearance?
