The car is still at the media blaster but I did manage to get some parts for the car, I found a releathered 370mm steering wheel, a left rear window mechanism -still looking for right front and right rear window mechanisms- and some sheetmetal. My 385mm M-wheel will be sold.

Also, I bought new door seals from Walloth&Nesh. Expensive, but the old seals were almost 40 years old and needed to be replaced. I will order some other doorparts later when the budget allowes it again, I also need the rubbers that sit next to the windows in the doors and besides the backseats. Also I need a boot rubber but W&N haven't got the OEM-part any more and I will be on the lookout for a reproduction, I know I need one as I experienced water in the trunk. Cant have water in the trunk...

In the first post where I mentioned the trip to the mediablaster (2 posts up) I added five pics and saved, then I placed more pics in a new post but the forumsoftware concatenated the two posts aand after a while put image 6-7-8 into the bin. So here they are...

Wow. That is some amazing work. Look like it will be fine when it comes back.

Are the blasters concentrating on the inside only? seems like some extra bits are on there yet.

Thanks, this time around the engine compartment, the front wheel wells, floorpan and inside of the cabin are cleaned up, this is because the E39 parts need to be installed into this body. I want a full E39 drivetrain as its way better than the drivetrain from the E24. Especially on the rear where it has independant suspension. Also it has better brakes as they're dimensioned for a heavier car, this means my car will stop properly compared to the standard brakes.

What do you mean with 'extra bits'? You mean it still has the axles on? In the end the car will be chemically dipped and rust proofed once all the welding has been done but this will also mean adding fortification to the body in the form of rollcage tubing, not as a full rollcage though but only to beef up the chassis.

Did you not pay tax on your door seals? I got two from BMW Classic and they were around €320 each but that included 20% tax.

It was a business purchase so I pay Dutch tax and then get it back.

That is a nice saving of nearly €100 to put towards your sandblasting. The parts for these cars are going up to crazy levels and then they are NLA. The pricing policy is as there are less parts the price goes up.

Exactly for this reason I purchased the doorseals now as I don't know if they will be available in two years from now. Guess we're all hoarding parts for future usage to keep the cars driving... I found a supplier of sheetmetal too, in Latvia where I'll purchase the front jack mounts as thay have already been repaired but are still not good.

It will be interesting to see how you get on with the parts. I had seen the website and the repair panels they have available. They give an option for repair of older BMW cars. To me they look like something suitable for a very rusty car as they do large floor sections.
I have made up lots of repair sections and it is very time consuming so if the fit is good it saves a lot of time.

We decided to also blast the underside of the floor to be able to see what the shell looks like and when my car is back from the blasterts I will order parts at Valcas Garage, when I look at the inside of the floorpan it looks quite decent so I hope it's not completely rusted out. Do you know any other suppliers that have sheet metal? I'll also need some for the tail lights. I could take that from a donor vehicle otherwise.

The only other suppliers of sheet metal for these cars sell it in 2.4m x1.2m. That is what I am using. What surprised me about the 6 series is compared to other 1980's BMW's there was not any aftermarket body panels. The only ones I found were the wheel arch repair panels I posted about.

BMW Classic had some panels but at eye watering prices. I had been watching them but now NLA. The only panels I bought were the battery tray and the other front tray. Bargain price of around €27 each including tax.
    They are no longer available.

Might be worth contacting Walloth & Nesch to see what they have available. They may gather all the remaining stock from BMW.

Mercedes does it's vintage business a lot better compared to BMW, you can buy all kinds of parts. They really look after their heritage.

I'll contact W&N to hear if any sheet metal is available but I think it'll be disappointing. It is indeed their strategy to purchase all NOS parts and sell them to owners of vintage cars. It is easier for them to buy complete stocks from closing dealers or when a dealer wants to clear out their warehouse.

I used Bavauto to procure engine parts in the past but as I'm switching to an E39 engine this means sourcing parts will be easier for me and I can create stock for myself.

The car will be setup to run on flex fuel which means it'll need to be able to withstand methanol in the fuel to be future compliant.

Nice thing about the US is we have a decent amount of scrappers where I was able to cut a fair amount of pieces I needed and able to let them in. Several pieces in the rear wheel wells were un obtainium and these we formed by hand I was lucky and the repairs are absolutely un noticeable. Biggest pain was the rear wheel arches which are an inner and outer section After many block sandings there is then a quart of Bondo in the whole car

I have the pictures from the chassis after it was media blasted by a shop, the tin worm has eaten my car a bit but it is not as bad as I had expected it to be. Pfew...

    signal-2020-06-10-163615 (Custom).jpg signal-2020-06-10-163615-1 (Custom).jpg signal-2020-06-10-163615-2 (Custom).jpg signal-2020-06-10-163615-3 (Custom).jpg signal-2020-06-10-163615-4 (Custom).jpg

With the rust out of the way the time has come to hack the E39 drivetrain into the chassis, new mounting points will need to be created. All this will happen together with the repair of the chassis. An E39 has a slightly wider track and different mounting locations for the subframes too.

A question of a different type: the steering rack.... I want to use an electric steering rack as it can be programmed to change its behavior depending on the speed, have any of you ever placed one in the E24 chassis? And if yes, are there pitfalls to look out for?

More pics of the blasted chassis to follow.

The thing with the blasting that I can see is that the areas of rust that are visible have the rust removed. On my car the inner wing reinforcements had rust inside that was visible only when I removed the front panel. I had to cut open the reinforcement to get at the rust.
The biggest amount of rust is on the inside where you cannot see. I would check inside those places with a camera. Also the complete chassis legs. The inner cills have four layers of metal. There are so many rust traps. Later cars seem to have more pieces added which makes it worse.
With regard to the steering rack you need a rack that mounts at the rear and it needs to be fitted tight to the engine to avoid bump steer problems.

Hi, thanks for the information, did you drill the spotwelds of the front panel to take it of?
You're talking about the inner cills, where do I find them in the chassis legs?
When my car has all metal work done it will be acid bath dipped and galvanized, I will just me sure that there are enough holes throughout the chassis to let the air out and acid in. Camera is a good point, will do. And thanks for the steering rack advice.

Good luck with your rebuild, gear knobs can be found at a breaker (are there still plenty of E28's to pick parts from?), specilaized E28 traders or if you don't mind cheap counterfit items, a Chinese knockoff site might have an auto stick.

A picture to illustrate what I am talking about. The cars tend to rust from the inside out. So any closed sections hide the rust. Attachment 672981

your picture of the engine bay side of the wing reinforcement.Attachment 672982

With regard to the front panel. So much rust that I only drilled a few spot welds. It was quicker to cut away the panel where the rust was and remake the attachment points. I have some repairs done but have more to do before it goes back on.

A picture of the RHS chassis leg. To chase the rust I had to remove alot of the inner structure and remake it.Attachment 672983

The garage is finally finished and a second lift is installed, this is where my car will sit for some time. It was tested with an old Opel Ascona on it for a few days to see if nothing would topple or go askew and luckily all is well.
Progress is not fast but there is progress. The black E39 is the donor vehicle I bought last year.

Bigcoupe is slowly declining, although a good source of information.

Looking forward to this build continuing. Have you thought of a V8 from an E39? That would go down well. I've seen the 4.4l V8 in an E30 so it should fit.
