Will an e28 cluster fit an e23?

So my cluster is in a bad way, the batteries blew up long before I got the car and seems to have eaten through everything. I have been slowly bringing the some of the gauges back, but I'm thinking a good cluster would save some time. It seems the e23 clusters demand big $$$ on eBay, so I was curious if the e28 cluster, or at least the innards were comparable with my 733i as they are much cheaper.

Try looking on realoem.com and enter your VIN to pull up what was fitted to your car. Then check the details of the part number and it will tell you what else it fits. The cluster housing itself, will not fit. That I do know. The circuit board that the instruments mount to could possibly be the same. probably on the tach. not sure on the speedometer and on the center cluster.

The main guts, tach and speedo will swap, I haven't been in the E23 cluster recently enough to know about the SII board or other parts will swap. Check per above to see.

    Thumbs up

Pretty sure the SI boards are the same, like 90% sure. Late cars have a different board. I am like Keith, been a while since I tore one down.

Entire thing will NOT swap. Speedo and tach will, to confirm.

US and ECE cars have different SI boards, something with the ground.
    I make E23 parts.

Thanks all for the info, the main and SI boards would be the big two I'd be interested in swapping, so that's great news.

Looking at realoem it appears the main board, conductor plate, is the same for E23/E28 for the 82-86 e28 US 535i and a bunch of E23s So you might be able to do a rebuilt with collected parts.

The entire assembly should swap over on later clusters.
I have multiple E23/24/28 clusters, and the entire rear assembly will just swap over.
