    Fuel filler door reminder

Be sure to periodically check the hinge for cracks. It’s plastic. If it breaks, you’ll lose the door. You’ll need to paint the new one.

I found it easiest to remove the door to replace the hinge. You’ll need to realign it. Not difficult.

    A good PSA.

Also, as a preventive measure, when fueling the car and placing the filler cap into the little cap-holder in the filler door, counter-hold the cap-holder (place equal upward pressure by holding the bottom of the cap-holder) to prevent putting too much strain on the door hinge when pushing the cap into the hole.

Is that the “Hinge, gas cap” or “spring”?

The hinge is plastic. The spring is steel. The gas cap need only be replaced if the seal or vacuum valve fails.

Or if you leave it in the gas filler door, take off from the gas station and start driving up the on ramp to the highway, and look in your mirror just in time to see it bouncing down the shoulder and off into the weeds.

So where does the hinge break, where the pin pivots?

IIRC, it broke at the steel pin.

But is easily noticed, if you carefully examine it.

Or if you hear something go "klunk" and don't realize it's gone until the CEL comes on.
