    Need help with my 330Cic!

Okay everyone, this is my second post ever so I'm clearly new to this forums scene. I've got an '02 330ci with an auto trans and everything is stock. I got it back from the mechanic recently, and he had replaced the fuel filter and pump. About 3 weeks later, the car started to give me a lot of trouble starting, and I'll explain in detail to help filter answers. I turn the key to fire it up, and it starts instantly, but it starts really rough and usually dies after about 5 seconds. If I rev it when I start it, the car runs okay after being throttled a bit. Even when it is warm it does this, however it is much less intense. I have done a little research, and have come to a conclusion that the issue could be ignition coils, the fuel pump or filter, or maybe the spark plugs. I'm new to the BMW world, but I'm also a research freak and this is the first problem to stump me. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Disclaimer: The car drives fine 99% of the time, but sometimes when I stop it starts to cut out and I've almost wrecked because of it

He did install a genuine fuel pump, and I believe he has always only installed OEM parts. I do not currently have a code reader, but would you happen to have any suggestions for one?

    Welcome aboard,
as you seem willing to research and learn,
I'm sure you'll do just fine as a newbie.

You are attempting to resolve this in reverse order,
as there is no reason to be stumped, YET, and rely on well researched guessing.

    As was mentioned above,
a diagnostic scan for BMW error codes followed by research on their meaning,
will hopefully lead to an informed diagnosis, no uninformed guessing required.

    Your welcome ryan!
Well then, here are some options,
    concerning diagnostic tools,

For a good BMW scan tool, I feel you have 3 options:

    • Foxwell nt520:http://www.foxwelltool.com/search/?q=NT520
    • Carly for BMW:http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/
    • INPA software for BMW: Do a search on bimmerforums

I recommended them in no specific order,
as selection is based more on preference.

INPA is an excellent diagnostic tool,
but is a proprietary BMW factory tool.
So all available copies are technically bootleg versions.
This requires a copy of the INPA software downloaded into a laptop computer,
along with the correct cables for your particular model of BMW.
I recommend this only for computer geeks, or the mostly computer savvy among us.

For an affordable standalone unit, Foxwell nt510(nt520 Updated version) is the preferred unit, along with required cables.
It can scan for BMW codes, among other things, as it can communicate with all BMW modules.

Carly for BMW is an APP,
and as such, requires a smartphone,
along with a connection to the OBD2 port in your vehicle,
supplied either by cable or wireless connection via Bluetooth dongle

CarlyUpdate: Now the full version is $74/year on a recurring subscription

Why wouldn't you go back and have the tech check it out, he can check for faults that's easy.
