We just purchased this 96 328is from some lady at a body shop. We are gutting this car, welding in a cage, taking to the track for enduro racing.
We installed a battery, drained the tank, fresh gas.. new plugs, car running fine.
this is a 2 door 5 speed car, the build sheet found under the rear seat points to a date of 2/05/96
The old woman at the body shop says... it need a neutral safety switch. other than that it runs great. well, obviously, that made me wonder what she meant, being its a straight drive car. so when we stuck a battery in it, we jumped the plug on the clutch switch, and it started fine.
Now, after running the car some, we have gutted the interior, and the glass, etc, now at a very non-coincendental time... now the car wont start. out of the blue. we have been very careful about not unhooking any wiring that we didn't understand. all computer components are still in place.
the dash lights up, the fuel pump runs, just NO CRANK.
How do we determine whether it is a EWS/DME problem, or just a simple relay problem.. etc ?
any help greatly appreciated.
I can provide proof of ownership. I can show pics.. whatever. its a 317K mile, ratty a$$ race car ! lol
No crank. Dash lights up, turn key on, fuel pump cycles, turn to crank position, nothing happens.
Start simple ... is the battery weak? Jump it ... does the starter click? Are you getting 12V on the starter solenoid terminal when cranking? If so, starter is dead ... if not, wiring or electrical.
If you're SURE the fuel pump is running and you're getting spark, it probably not the EWS
Its not the battery. new optima. This car has started and ran perfectly over and over all day long in the shop. Then all the sudden, poof, no click, no crank. Any body else?
Have you tried to jump the starter with +12V at the small terminal? This should cause instant cranking.
