Hi All:
I want to change the transmission and rear differential oil in my 2006 Z4M. Can you help me verify I have the right parts and quantities:
Rear Differential:
- Red Line Shockproof Gear Oil 75W-140 (Product Link); Quantity: 1.2 liters
- Drain Plug (Product Link); Quantity: Do I need 1X or 2X?
- Do I need 1x or 2x (i.e one for drain and one for fill)?
- Thinking of picking up the magnetic version instead.
- If the answer to #3 is 2X, do I need both to be magnetic or just one
Manual Transmission:
- Synchromax Transmission Fluid (Product Link); Quantity: 2 Quarts
- Transmission Plug (Product Link) Quantity: Do I need 1X or 2X?
Also, is there any reason not to pump out the oil using on Oil Extractor instead of using the drain plugs similar to oil changes?
Anything else that I have overlooked?
Thanks much in Advance!
I'm going to be doing these next weekend on my Z4MR.
Two plugs. They are the same size. If you go with a magnetic plug it only needs to be for the drain. Some have had problems with the ECS magnetic plugs snapping. I went with Dimple.
Two plugs here as well. Again, you can use a magnetic plug for the drain, if you wish.
I am going with RP Synchromax as well.

Thanks, @gpraceman
This is super helpful. Quick follow up questions, to avoid making mistakes:
- Which magnetic drain plug can I use for the Transmission – the same (specs) as the rear diff?
- Which Oil are you going to use for Read Diff?
- Finally, any benefits of draining oil vs. extracting using pump?
Thanks for your help!
1. Not the same plug for diff and tranny. Tranny plug part# 23117531356, diff part# 33117525064. One is M18x1.5x12 and the other is M22x1.5x9.
2. I am going with Castrol Syntrax. As far as I can tell that is the OEM fluid, without the BMW markup. Though, it does not have the FM booster additive.
3. It would seem to me that you would get a better drain by taking the drain plug out.
Do make sure you can loosen the fill plugs before you remove the drain plugs. You don't want to drain your oil only to find that you cannot get the fill plug off.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. I'll be ordering the parts and working on this the next weekend as well. In case any of the plugs stick, do you recommend PB Blaster to loosen them?
Also, do you happen to know the torque settings for the plugs?
Good luck to you on your weekend project

Not sure on PB Blaster. This is the first time that I will be attempting this project. Fortunately, I will be doing it along with other guys more knowledgeable than I, at a DIY day for our local ZSCCA club.
On torque settings, I found this guide that is useful.

Thanks for the guide, and also for sharing the club info. I'm in Dallas, TX and there's an active community here. I may end up joining as well. Good luck, and let me know how your project goes.
