Have 2003 540 with 200,000 miles. Have heard a "marble but rhythm" like rattle coming from the oil filter housing with engine idling. this noise was first noticed around 130,000 miles on the odometer. with this there never were any "adverse" effects noted with operation or running of the engine. However, just around 190,000 miles I have noticed an oil pressure warning light on for few seconds after a cold start and sometimes warm start as well. So I dug into the oil filter housing to see what I can find - mostly looking for an anti drain valve or check valve may be broken??? This is what I found...anti-drain-4 (1).jpganti-drain-1.jpgoil-filter-housing.jpg
After replacing the oil filter housing, on start up the oil pressure light did not illuminate at all AND no more vanos rattling sound on start up either - at least for the past 5 start ups.
what is a shame is that you cannot source the plastic anti drain valve anywhere on the net.
conclusion - the rattling came from the broken anti drain valve being "pushed" by oil pressure and "bouncing" in the anti drain valve channel. The prongs (3) controls the anti drain valve movement inside the oil intake channel.

Looks like this may be the cause of my rattle as well.
