Hello all! I hope you are enjoying some fine summer wrenching. I haven't had any need to post lately but I've discovered a great project for the "dog days" of summer.
Recently I've discovered that my gear shifter box is getting abnormally warm while driving. It seems to be worse when I am using one of the cigarette lighter ports to charge my phone. I've even had a couple of the chargers get very hot and cease operating.

Is there an amp limit on those cigarette lighter ports?
Is that gear shifter box supposed to get that warm?
Thanks in advance for any insight on this!!
I have the same issue. What happens with mine is the shifter would be lukewarm after arriving to my destination e.g. 30km trip. Sits for a while then gets hot very quickly after I start it up again and drive back.
Maybe something burnt inside, clean it http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/744694/

It usually gets warm. Cigarette lighter is fused, see fusebox fuse for the Amps.

The rod coming out of there gets warm on mine. Down here in Florida if I dont run the A/C, it seems to get really hot really quick. As long as the A/C is running and keeping the interior cool, it is barely noticable. Maybe you have a hole in the heat shield?

Looks like all get warm a bit. As Serge says, check the heat insulation from below. Also reconfirm that the heat insulation engine compartment is installed, especially item 23, also called engine splash guard under the engine

If that part is missing, cooling air for the cpl. drive train is not going the correct way. The engine bay is designed with the heat insulation as almost enclosed capsule, this includes even the hood sealing. Air is pulled by the visco fan and aux fan into the engine bay to cool the engine, then it should pass along the transmission and cool the trans

Make sure your cat isn't clogged and producing more heat than it should.
I greatly appreciate all the input. I will inspect the heat shield around that area next time I'm underneath the vehicle. But the general consensus of the forum seems to be "don't stress it".
Like I said originally, dog days of summer. I will also look into that clogged cat (I'm sure there is a post on it already).
Thanks again as always!
When I still had the automatic transmission, the shift lever ran a lot cooler after doing a few periodic 4-quart drain & fills with full synthetic ATF.
