    Junk Yard find questions

    My e34 is a 1995 525i

Found another same car in the local JY. Questions

    1. My cluster has been having problems displaying the correct fuel level and sometimes speedo, so the capacitors are fried. Can I remove cluster from junker and plug and play or is there coding and security issues?

    2. The JY has remote key enter module. Take that plus the wiring but then how do you get a remote key and how to make it work?

    Thanks

Factory alpine remotes cost a fortune for the alarm, unless you have one already. I wish I kept some old ones I had, want to add the factory alarm to my car but not paying $150+ for a remote. The alarm modules are cheap on ebay.

Anyone know of an aftermarket generic remote that can work?

You guys are awesome. Thanks. So I just need to find a key fob. The e39 I was tearing into last week had a key under the front seat, maybe I’ll get lucky with the e34.

Aftermarket generic remotes can be programmed to work according to a few automotive locksmiths I've talked to about the E34. E34s after 1991 use radio like every other car of today but early ones used IR, which has absolutely no aftermarket support. I've got a stock system on my car but the PO lost the remote and I can't track down another one and they're not made anymore.

As for programming the remote, there should be a guide to it in the manual. It's something simple like having the key in ignition 2 and holding the lock button.

Just make sure the color of the back cover of your cluster is the same as the one from the junkyard. It should be blue. Just swap coding plugs.

PM me about a keyless remote. I should have something on hand for you.

For alarm. I found the Viper system to be quite nice.

    Nobody steals E34s, guys.
ANY car that comes into my possession with an aftermarket alarm gets it removed pronto. I've yet to see a decent installation of one. Nothing but problems lurking if you ask me.
Kouks, I have a '95 cluster with cracked cover and missing LCD display I was saving for some reason. Yours for the cost to ship it should you want it. PM if so.
    Cheers,

I’m just looking to get her a remote so she can join the modern age and also have an alarm if she needs to activate it.

Ross, I’ll try the blue backed cluster I got from the JY and let you know if I need yours or not.

Cluster installed and works great, swapped code module, and yes it had the same baby blue back on it.

Remote Entry and Alarm system installed, still looking for key fob, not found in JY. Asked at Autozone if I could use a generic remote, they looked it up on their system and told me to go to the dealer.

Have a look on eBay for a remote, it'll be a lot cheaper than going to the dealer and programming isn't too difficult. I've found plenty of remotes for the later E34s for decent prices.

Ross, what about installing aftermarket remote central locking? I have the original IR system in my car but no remote. A used IR remote is almost $400 and I'd rather have a cheaper system that will be guaranteed to work since I have no idea if the IR stuff would still function.

Alarm systems usually don't come with relays for central locking. Sure they have a remote and the alarm has triggers for central locking, but the alarm door lock output is low current so you or an installer has to add and wire the relays for the locking function separately anyway.

I had to rewire my old cyclops alarm (made by dynamco) a while back and the relays were just added generic ones cable tied and stuffed into the kick panel, it wasn't part of the alarm (though the alarm remote triggered lock/unlock).

You can get separate central locking kits but they come with actuators which you don't really need (unless you want spares).
You can get just the remote module and relays that do central looking from mongoose https://mongoose.com.au/remote-centr...35-detail.html but no idea how much they cost (might be cheaper buying the kit with actuators from overseas, or might cost the same as getting a full dynamco alarm anyway - here in WA we have to have an immobilzer by law so may as well make it an alarm and central locking feature too).

Wiring is pretty simple, even my alarm installers didn't stuff that part up. There's 12V under the dash to power it, and 2 wires needed to run for lock/unlock at the drivers kick panel/floor side wiring. I doubt an installer would charge more than $140 to fit. No messing with immoblizer/door switches/horn required, though you may want to hook up to indicators so you can see them flashing when locking/unlocking but that's a simple splice that I've seen done on my own car. Rather than buy from ebay just look up a local mongoose dealer and get a price for supply and fitting price (just keep that ebay price in mind so you know you're not getting ripped off). No point buying a mongoose system and finding later there's no installer of that brand local to you - if no dealers then see if there's a cyclops/dynamco equivalent product for a similar price)

I have no idea about this. Any car that comes into my hands with aftermarket stuff has it removed pronto. Maybe they aren't all bad but I've yet to see an installation I could be proud of.
I have a few of the factory alarm/remote modules gathered over the years, Alpine units I think, but no fobs I can think of. Not sure if IR or radio.????
If these are of use to anyone feel free to send a message.

Mine came with an aftermarket system which worked for a few months but crapped out pretty badly to the point that I'd have to unhook the battery to start the car. I've since had it removed which was a really quick job by he auto electrician and it was all located under the dash. I'm wondering a little if that will complicate things.

I'd love to use the stock system but I think they started using radio after 1991 or 1992 so mine being an 89 build date, I'm out of luck for getting a new remote.
