Hello,
I need help with my 2000 735i.
I in the process of replacing both cat converters soon, and a few days ago, in the morning when starting the engine, idle went rough, and CEL flashed.
Engine shake while driving, and it was a pain to drive.
I managed to clear the codes, but they came back soon and so did the shaking and loss of power.

All 8 ignition coils are brand new (Bremi) and spark plugs replaced 6 months ago.
I did replace the valve cover gaskets 6 months ago.
My question is, could it be related to clogged cat or is it something different like a vacuum leak on the intake?
It's driving me nuts, and the car is a pain to drive...
Thank a LOT for your help.
My question

Have a read of this and see if your problem in any way matches it:

Hi Timm,
Thanks for your reply.
Actually your tutorial was the first thing I checked when it happened!
I'm not sure that my problem matches what you describe.
Engine shake on idle or at high rpms, only throw a code from one cylinder instead of a bank.
If it is only a slight vibration and only when you put throttle on when cruising then I would believe what diagnostics are telling you and that the injector on cylinder 5 is not doing anything. They can go open-circuit. Diagnostics would find it as a zero value for cylinder 5 on the smoothness page....

Actually it's a pretty strong vibration.
I can feel it and hear the engine misfiring and/or running on 7 cylinders...
The weird thing is that it randomly appears and and disappears.
Though when oil is fully warmed up, it's shaking all the time.
Swap coil and sparkplug to opposite bank to verify.
The car had what I believe to be original coils when the problem appeared.
I've replaced all 8 coils right after.
I'will do the test anyway.
It seems cylinder #5 specifically is the cause of your problem,
so I would focus on the injector, electrical connection, wiring harness,
and finally DME which contains the injector driver.
Timm would be more familiar with this,
as I have never personally opened up an e38 DME/ECU
Since the code specifically says Injector circuit. I'd look at the injector plug, then the injector itself.

Yeah, that makes sens.
I will take a look today.
I have replaced valve cover gaskets 6 mouths ago, maybe I missed something when reinstalling the box, and injector plug is not held correctly ...?
Ok, so I did a visual check, and the main connector to the driver side black box looks strange.
The green grommet was visible and out of its place.
I carefully plugged in the connector without pinching the grommet, fired up the engine, and voilą, smooth as it used to be!
Glad it was something simple

So I'm assuming that was your injector harness.
Thanks for you help!
I have to admit that it was a stupid problem
Glad it was an easy fix.
