E39 Air Duct vs M Aero Air Duct

    Hi folks,

Just trying to buy a replacement part and was wondering if anyone knows the difference between these 2 parts apart from different lower horizontal rubber section?

    Standard part no. 51718159959

    M aero part no. 51712498939

The standard part can be had for half the cost of the M part (naturally).

Will that standard part fit fine with the rest of my m plastics?

    Cheers

The lower section of the standard part sits over and projects outwards about an inch over the lower lip opening of the M bumper. You have to trim it if you stick with it, but the volume of air intake is slightly reduced. So you can use it, but from an operational standpoint, you are not taking advantage of its proper function, switching over to the sport bumper.

Interesting. It's a shame as my original m sport duct is smashed mainly above the lower opening section. Would be good if I could someone graft that bottom section onto a new standard one. But that sounds like some mucking around.

Edit: Scratch that, it's all stuffed.

Shoot, I could fix that if I wanted to, cut and snip, drill some holes, use some rivets, Frankenstein the sucker if you don’t want to spend the money.

I'm fixing a few other bits like that.

    eg.

    09 Engine compartment screening, front 1 51712695680 $172.85

That part has very small damage and can be fixed.

I figured as smashed as the air duct is I may as well buy another one. Would rather it remains in place nice and snug with that aux fan spinning wildly behind it.

Oh and thanks for that heads up on the part differences.

No problem! Nothing wrong repairing something, just as long as it is as strong or stronger than stock.
