1998 540I v8 not as quick off the line as it should be

The car is fast, but, if I hammer the pedal, it delays a good second...prior owner I am told put in new coils and plugs.

Is it automatic? Maybe it's shifting down? Are you lugging it or is it up in RPM when you "hammer the pedal"?

The law does NOT determine "right" from "wrong". They are unrelated.

If you put cheap parts on your car, you will soon have a cheap parts car.

Have you driven other '98 540s to compare?

    Essential question.

Also, are there any engine codes.

Vac leaks and high trims can cause weird accel issues but you should see if there are codes. No the fact you don't have a CEL / SES doesn't mean that you don't have codes.

I purchased the bmw 1.4 scanner, see no engine codes. Have no CEL. Have not driven others. Prob not a full second delay, but 1/2...It's just not instant. Checked the cables to the throttle body, tight. New K&N filter when I got it. Plugs look great, car overall seems very well cared for. Engine clean inside (did valve cover gaskets)...Cleaned MAF also.

One of his other post said 190K miles and said Michigan.
Rockford?? He could be using a VPN (which is OK) as the IP doesn't jive with Rockford.

Automatic, sorry. It's not downshift delay at all, it's just a big delay.

FWIW - I've seen a similar problem when I was Autocrossing my 528i. (Also an automatic.) When coming out of sharp turns and flooring the throttle, there was a significant delay before any RPM's would build. In my case, changing the shift pattern from D to 3 or 2 seemed to alleviate a good portion of the delay. Not perfect, but better.
