Hi! I have BMW E39 4.4 M62B44 1996 .
About three weeks ago I noticed a strange knocking (about 2000 RPM) coming out from under the valve covers / timing covers.

Two days later I replaced the timing chain tensioner, because my friend told me it's nessesary in 250.000+ km engine. Now after replacing, my engine sounds like this:

I tried to reinstall new tensioner 3 times, but nothing changes . Is it a broken guides or a stretched chain? Thank you very much for help .
The chain shouldn't be stretched, they will last well over 200K Miles.
It could be the guides, drop the lower oil pan to see if there are any broken guide parts in it.
"Engine sounds" are so hard to replicate via recordings (nice crazy high-rez video tho').
I'm not sure I hear anything alarming there. In the first video I really don't know what you're worried about...
In the second one it sounds like fairly normal M6x sounds although maybe like the tick tick of a small exhaust leak or a little bit of valvetrain noise... doesn't seem alarming to me but again - perhaps in live and in person its more objectionable/noticeable...

Any codes or drivability issues. Like GG stated, sounds like normal M62 sounds.
Drop your oil pan, it’s not too hard, to see if you have guide pieces.
Hello again.
On the first video the engine works almost perfectly, but listen to the tapping/knocking (during gas addition). This is not normal and very loud.Originally Posted by geargrinder
No no, wait . Engine at idle (before replacing chain tensioner) was very quiet, began to make noise after replacing the tensioner.Originally Posted by geargrinder
No codes, no errors, but I don't know something about drivability issues, because I don't drive this car (I'm afraid) .Originally Posted by Mannyf540
probably lifters? these m62s mostly all sound like that. This engine doesnt have Vanos right?
The reason the engine sounds like that now is because you added a new tensioner that puts more tension on the chain. The old tensioner had the perfect amount of tension because the spring was worn out. this tension was the perfect amount for the worn out guides.
