86 325E with manual transmision
I am about to pull the engine / transmission assembly out and have a question about the shifter assembly.
Can I leave it on the transmission and pull the shifter arm or do I need to disengage the bitch clip and pull the entire assembly? I am hoping there is a way to take off the shifter arm and worry about the bitch clip after the unit is out and on the floor.
any help appreciated
we always pop off that clip and separate the arm from the shifter
No e30s again.
The reason I am asking
There is no way BMW puts that clip on after they install the engine transmission assembly. So it stands to reason it was on there when installed. It also stands to reason that the car rolled down the line, therefore the suspension was already installed preventing them from putting the engine and transmission in from the bottom straight up. So my thought was that they tilted it and guided it in.
My question now is, is this a manual transmission that these guys pulled out and if so is that the shifter? You can just jump to 2:45 in the video

I'm pretty sure the engine, transmission, front subframe and suspension are installed as a complete assembly.

you are talking about the one right under the shifter, right? the one right under the shifter can just be pushed off with a screw driver or plier but the one at the end nearest the transmission sucks. you can pop it off also but it is a blind push. I leave the one and just pop off the shifter clip and leave the linkage attached the transmission

If that is the only one I have to take off I'm golden, that one is easy. I'm talking about the one past the gubilo. I can't quite figure out how to get to that one. I'm almost at the point I can lean the assembly back and was hoping I could reach it then. Or better yet do I just need to take the one off, the easy one?
that one, its tough. I leave that one alone and just wait till its out of the car if I need to mess with it

I removed a manual transmission and engine from a 325e also. Once I pulled the shifter mechanism off and it was fairly simple after that.
Use a hook to dislodge the clip - such as the tool to remove exhaust donuts - and pull from the back of the transmission and it should pop right off.

The main hangup for me was that darn clip also.. but I was able to pop the clip and remove the engine and transmission together.

IF you drop the subframe/engine/transmission together, then all you need to do is unbolt the rear carrier bushing, and free up the rubber shifter boot/grommet. (Remove the knob/shift boot, of course.)

there is a diy using a rad hose pick that works. i substitute the rad hose pick for a hammer in style storage hook and it pops first try every time.
DIY: Undo the bitch clip the easy way
