Plan to replace mine soon, have the basic run down of the procedure, but it is a transmission and I'd like to feel more confident being I have yet to pop one of these open

Yup, did it about 6 months ago on my 99 528 which had 165k at the time.
Bought a kit with all the solenoids and did filter and gaskets all at same time. Took an hour and a half talking my time not to bend or break off the retaining roller pins. Several came out on first pull but one took a good 10 minutes to finally get out. If I had to do it again, I'd have a spare roll pin or two on hand so if one really bends or snaps you can just use a small drill bit, remove and get right back to installing the new solenoid.
I also followed one of the Youtube videos from Nathan on adjusting the trans bands as well. My trans at 170k feels and shifts just like new. Butter smooth and kick down and S3 mode are so much sharper compared to old solenoids and fluid.
