e46 m54 engine smoking the worst I've ever seen.

Picked up a 2.5 m54 car needing an engine. Bought a 3.0 from what appears to be a reputable source (and paid through paypal). Had it swapped in and it smokes oil from the tail pipe worst than any car I've ever seen. So bad that I don't think the seller would have sold it to me through paypal had he known. I didn't pick the engine up my self but seller had a video of it running which I or my driver never saw.

It doesn't smoke when cold and actually runs okay on cold starts, but after about 10 minutes of running it smokes heavily, misfires (in 5 cylinders according to scanner) and will eventually stop. I've tried changing the oil separator and its respective tubing. Any other suggestions, before I try to get my money back from the seller?

I feel you have 2 options:

1.If you're really interested in diagnosing and repairing this engine,
then I recommend performing a cylinder leakdown test,
this will help verify engine condition.

2.Your really not interested in investing more cash for repairs,
on an engine you assumed would be in drop-in-running condition,
and you're willing to try a possible quick fix to a common problem,
before you give up and attempt to get your money back,
Then I recommend the product in this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vo4fm0JDPY

Man if that product performs as advertised it's really neat!

Is this acrid blue oil smoke, or it this sweet-smelling white coolant ?

    More potent product than that,
plus this is a different engine.

When you replaced the crankcase vent system, did you check whether the intake manifold was full of oil? If the manifold doesn't have a bunch of oil in it, I'd say you need new valve guides and seals.

    +1 to what dirtracer said.

check this thread out I have had similar issues with my 04 330Ci smokes out of the exhaust really bad, I've tried most of the common simple fixes but nothing is working.
