I developed a severe leak from the pump seal on my 4HP24 transmission in my 850. Estimates from dealers and local shops were from $2000-$3200 to rebuild the pump and repair. I found a reputable shop, highly recommended, they did it for $1600 with a one day turn around. the shop is 3 hours from me, as I live in a remote area. I had the car taken there by CAA, when I picked up the car, it had now developed the dreaded hard shifting (it didn't do that before), and shifting all over the place. They recommended I find another valve body, they would rebuild it, then bring the car back for a changeout. I found a valve body for $275 and sent it over to them. They after I sent it out, the next morning I was accellerating and after one big bang, I coasted to the side of the road, The car wouldn't rev past 1500 RPM in any gear or park, It would not move in any gear. I had the car CAA towed to the transmission shop. I haven't seen it, but the tech says he's never seen anything like it, and told me to look for another transmission. I found a used 4 HP 24 for $900, and am driving the 3 hours there and back to take it there. They will rebuild it, and install at no charge.
My question is...shouldn't they be on the hook for it blowing up? should I ask to meet me halfway? It never ran correctly after they worked on it, and told me I was ok to drive until the valve body was changed out...Am I way out of line here?
Just a guess, maybe they did not install the torque converter correct and that destroyed the input shaft https://www.europeantransmissions.co...rter_insta.htm

www.eurotransspecialists.com are the only guys in the USA that still remanufactured the 4HP24 that I know of... and they are better than new. All in, you'd have spent less getting a unit from them. I put one in the TT 750 and it is sweet...
whine often comes also from too low ATF level or not proper fitting O-rings on top of the trans filter, then besides ATF the pump also sucks air = causing whining sound.
Here some samples of bad fitting O-rings we found when making trans service on 4HP24 http://e32b12.blogspot.com/2012/10/t...er-o-ring.html

In hindsight yes, it probably would have been cheaper, but it went in for a leaking pumpseal...would you buy a new transmission if you had a leaking seal? It went from there...
I'm picking up and dropping of the used 4 HP24 today, I'll be able to look at the damage in my original this afternoon when I drop it off...that should tell the tale...
