^ I did earlier today and its still doing it. No dice
Good looking out man,
I think I am going to use the 3/4" master for the time being atleast until I put some power in this thing and start running more rear grip. I didn't have a problem locking the rears up at the last event I drove.
I got my tuned ECU in the mail and loe and behold it works great. Pulls clean to 7k and is running better than ever (Means it'll blow up soon).
I got tires mounted up and I am ready to drive at Sebring tomorrow. There is a little competition for solo class and since I don't have a cage in this thing yet I am going to see how I do in that. Will be the first time on track with this thing running right. Also pretty excited to drive at Sebring, motorsport royalty as far as tracks go.
It was one of those ebay listings for a tuned ecu from moldova. This listing here https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Chip-Tu...72.m2749.l2649
Shipping was a bit slow but to be expected since it came from europe. It was a good deal since I didn't have to send my dme as a core and it did exactly what I needed it to do.
So its the day after Sebring. I had a good time, as to be expected its was hot as hell since well florida, I drank a gallon of water over the day. I started off the event a bit unprepared since there were only 11 drivers that showed up for the solo class and since we had our own layout that was seperate from the tandem guys that equaled out to a lot of track time. I only had 4 new tires to drift on plus a set of used tire to drive home on. I spent most of the day trying to conserve my tires so I'd have something to drive the competition on. Drove way more practice runs that I had expected to do because I kept holding out hope for nailing a run with the 3rd gear upshift in the middle of the course that I later realized with my higher rev limit wasn't necessary. Once I realized I could stay in 2nd for the whole course that really changed the way I drove and started nailing the course.
I went into the comp thinking I wasn't going to do very well and it turned out after a few one more times including an OMT for first place (With the guy I was sure was going to win after watching for a good portion of the day) I took myself out by driving off line on the very last run and ended up in second place. 100% my mistake, the car was doing what I wanted all day I am still feeling out this things potential.

Pretty satisfying to take the lowest powered car in the field (Next lowest was about 200hp, the winning car is 389whp) and get 2nd place in my second event in the car. I can't wait to get this thing dialed in and start driving more
The last run in the video is my second to last run, I forgot to hit record on my final run when I fucked up and took myself out.
Sebring would be so much fun to drive. I have heard that the surface is INCREDIBLY hard on tires.
Well went and did another Sebring event,
Changes on the car include:
Swapped out the Getrag 420G for a ZF320, The 3rd gear syncro issue was annoying the hell out of me and keeping me from driving the car as hard as I wanted to.
Swapped in my 3.15 3 clutch LSD, So much nicer to drive than the welded.
M50 intake mani
Redrilled the strut tops for more caster
here's video of my fastest entry from the weekend. I really want more power so it doesn't take starting off at half the straight to get up to 100mph.
Less handbrake, more flick. Technically shouldn’t even need the handbrake at all but I admit I’m still trying to master that as well, I still need a dab of it to do what I want.
Well this is just one run, I did many others that were more heavy on using more angle to slow down. I leaned on the handbrake more on this run since the tires I was using this run had dramatically less grip (had less grip at 25psi than the previous set at 65psi) than the others I had been on that day and didn't really trust them. Like I said this was my fastest entry of the day but didn't have much faith in the tires digging me out at more angle.
This course with my current setup I highly doubt it would be feasible to not use any handbrake at all going that fast and honestly what would be the point other than stroking myself off?

Because no angle. Looks extremely underwhelming from the outside. Don’t forget, drifting is about overall excitement.
Oh I totally forgot about that thanks for reminding me oh drift sensei. I was totally lacking in angle all day and everyone was bored to death, I now understand why.
You’re the guy posting vids of yourself.
Video gone. I wanna see!
The problem with a subjective sport is that everyone has opinions. Over use of hand brake, under use. Low angle. No style in the car. Blah blah.

Ah, Liquidity, back at it again after his time away. It was so pleasant without him....
Piner- How far did you drill your strut tops for more adjustment?
Sebring looks like fun.
Keep it simple: half gutted '01 330i, welded diff, BC coils, SLR Super kit
^I reversed the strut pattern since the SLR top plates combined with the e36 pattern do not allow more positive caster adjustment only less. Didn't really want to dril into my strut tops but I wanted more positive caster so I felt it was worth it.

Also found some photos from the event of my low angle driving

Other point of interest, Ryan our Fabricator who builds all the control arms for SLR did I think 8 or 9 laps in the car. Reason why that is significant is he has been building our arms for 5-6 years now but has never actually drifted a car with a kit on it and got to experience his handiwork. Its a bit ironic though the kit on my car is a 2012 vintage kit well before he worked for us so he didn't build these arms, they were made by the same guy who built the roll cage in my black coupe. I'd really love to buy a brand new kit and put it on the vert but the old stuff still works so well it would really just be a cosmetic upgrade more than anything.
Plans for the car before the next event are mainly switching to E36 non-M front knuckles. The E46 non-M knuckle's trail leaves a lot to be desired. Even with the large increase in caster from the strut tops the self steer although much better still doesn't match my black coupe. The non-M e36 knuckle has considerably more trail and should feel better.
Then I think I'm gonna focus on making the car look good, bodywork, paint and all that. As far as power goes, I am a bit torn between just throwing all my turbo stuff on it or going for what I really want and throwing a Maserati 4.2L V8 in it.
It's CRAZY you mention a maserati 4.2... I was looking at those motors recently! They can be had stupid inexpensively... and the sounds the make....
Would you be making up a custom adapter plate to the ZF?
As far as your drilling- it kind of looks like that's the least impact on the structural integrity as you could possibly have. Seems like it's a good method.
Low angle driving never looked better.

Why not M E36 for bigger brakes? That's what I have on my E46

The Maserati engine has been on my mind the last year or so when I came across a craigslist ad for one then I started doing some research into it. Found out all the things you listed and some other cool details that make it very desirable to me. Things like the facotry drysump system on the earlier engines, the fact that despite being a DOHC engine it has weight parity with an all Aluminium LS1, full bedplate bearing cap arrangement, etc. There are a lot of really cool details on that engine and the price is super temping. I've become a little bit obsessed with the idea of doing the swap, I just have to pull the trigger on a running copart car.
I was toying with the idea of using the torque tube/ rear transaxle setup since we have one here at the shop for mock up, turns out the output flanges are the same as E46M3 so M3 axles bolt up to it. The F1 transaxle can be easily converted to full manual by using a cable shifter and a regular hydraulic throw out. But the space constraints in the E36 means I'd have to build a custom subframe, run a fuel cell and figure out a host of other packaging problems that I don't really want to deal with. So yes I am thinking an adapter plate for the ZF makes the most sense. Starter is on the engine in its own cutout on the engine side, the factory flywheel/clutch assembly is pretty small so it shouldn't be hard to fit it's pattern inside the BMW pattern. I talked with some companies that tune the ECU's and well they seemed a little bewildered when I asked about them turning off all the can function and anti-theft stuff. Wiring seems rather simple and all the electronics are just off the shelf Bosch ME7 stuff so a standalone should run all that stuff pretty easy. The factory Headers are pretty compact and the engine makes plenty of power with them already so I'd probably try to stick with them.
Lots of other little details I've been thinking about but if Im going to do it I need to just bite the bullet and buy a salvage car and start doing some measurements.
Well the e36 M3 knuckles although they do have more trail than the e46 non-M, the E36 non-M has the most trail out of any of the 3 series knuckles, its what I was used to on my Black 325i and my old 328i. For larger brakes I'd just go with E46 330Ci brakes since they are very similar in size to e36m but they will fit on non-M knuckles without issue. I don't feel like I want larger brakes on the front of the car and I think I'd rather have smaller rotors with less rotational mass.
Why you gotta make me second guess getting M knuckles? My rears are now E46 M3 so I feel like non M E36 front brakes would be... smaller than my rears lol.

IIRC didn't chelsea run E36 non M knuckles on his 46 FD car?
Yea but he also likely had wilwood brakes. Oh yea IIRC the M3 knuckles have beefier wheel bearings. The non Ms wear out faster.

Yeah we've been telling our dudes running competitively to use E36 Non-M knuckles on their E46's. We are working on a High trail steering plate for E46's to solve their low trail problem. The first batch should be available soon. My car is looking to be the test vehicle since despite having a bunch of drift cars in the shop my vert is the only one that runs lol.
